Topic 2-Mix & Flow Flashcards
Pure Substance
A substance made up of only one type of matter.
Mechanical Mixture
Heterogeneous mixture. A mixture in which the different substances are easy to see.
Mixture
Combination of two or more different pure substances.
Soloution
Homogeneous mixture
Mixture of two or more pure substances that looks like one substance.
Heterogeneous Mixture
Mixture in which the different substances can be seen.
Homogeneous Mixture
A mixture in which the different substances cannot be seen
Suspension
Cloudy mixture in which droplets or tiny pieces of one substance are held within another substance. If you leave a suspension undisturbed, its parts will usually separate out.
Colloid
Cloudy mixture in which the droplets or tiny particles are too small to separate out.
What are some examples of mechanical mixtures? (Heterogenous)
Trail Mix
Chicken Noodle Soup
Cereal
What are some examples of solutions? (Homogeneous)
Cake Batter
Lemonade
Jello
Salt Water
What are some examples of suspensions?
Orange juice with pulp
Muddy water
What are some examples of colloids?
Milk
Whipped Cream
Butter
What is paper chromatography?
It is a test of fluids to see if they are pure substances or solutions. I’m he test a piece of filter paper is placed partially into the fluid. If the fluid is a solution, the different substances in it will move up the paper to different levels. If it is a pure substance it will move up the paper to one level
What is a chromatogram?
It’s the filter paper used to test substances used in paper chromatography.
Solute
Substance that dissolves in a solvent to form a solution.
