Fresh & Saltwater Systems Final Flashcards
List the factors that are used to determine water quality.
Taste and Odour Turbidity and Colour Toxic Substances Bacteria Hardness pH Dissolved oxygen Solids and Floaties Dissolved Solids
What is hard water?
Hard water has more nitrogen and magnesium content than soft water.
What is distillation?
Boiling of saltwater so the water evaporates leaving the salt water behind.
What is reverse osmosis?
Forcing salt water through a filter or membrane with holes to small for the salt to pass through.
What are waves?
Waves are changes in patterns that move along the waters surface. Most waves are caused by wind.
What effect does water have on shorelines?
The force of water crashing against the shoreline can change the shape of the shore.
What causes tides?
The gravitational force of the moon is the main reason for ocean tide on earth.
Describe the first stage of a river.
A river or stream may start in the mountains where the glacier is melting.
Describe the second stage of a river.
In early stages it flows swiftly and straight, but as the ground becomes more level, the water slows down.
Describe the last stage of a river.
At the mouth, the river enters a lake or the ocean.
What is chemical weathering?
Erosion can occur because of chemical weathering. Caves form when rain water or streams dissolve limestone and other rocks.
What is a watershed?
A watershed is all the area of land that drains into the main lake or river.
What are moraines?
Moraines form from rock or gravel build up along the side of the glacier.
What are eskers?
Eskers form when parts of the glacier melt into tunnels under the ice.
What are Drumlins?
Drumlins are small hills with a teardrop shape. They form when glaciers move over moraines.
