more generic - highlight something on whole chromosome (family of probes)
eg: another part of chromosome attached to chromosome 7 and another chromosome with chromosome 7 attached = reciprocal translocation

karyotyping - whole chromosome
can compare tumour cell and normal cell - where translocations, duplications etc
