what does MRSA stand for?
meticillin resistant staphylococcus aureus
what is MRSA?
a bacterial infection that;
- resistant to many antibiotics
- can happen very quickly
- easily transmitted via superficial abrasions and minor skin trauma
- redness, swelling, and tenderness at the site of infection
- manage with early recognition and referral / treated in hospital (often over several weeks to make sure no drainage and infection does not spread)
what is impetigo contagiosa?
- caused by streptococci
- spread through close contact
- starts off with mild itching and then turns red and then erupts into different vesicles that will rupture. forms a crust
- occurs in body folds
- often seen around face
- management: keep clean or systemically with oral antibiotics if major
what is a furuncles (boils)?
- infection of hair follicle that usually result in pus formation
- staphylococci are usual causes
- back of neck, face and butt is common areas affected
- want to rupture on its own
- manage with antibiotics and avoid contact while it is draining (open)
what is paronychia and onychia?
paro: outside of nails
ony: around the nail bed
- caused by staph, strep and fungal orgasnisms
- can damage cuticle and puts the finger at risk
- rapid onset, with painful swelling of proximal and lateral fold in the nail
- pus can accumulate
are fungal infections contagious?
yes
- direct contact
- contaminated clothing
- showers
- change rooms
what is ringworm or TINEA?
a fungal infection on the body
what is tinea corporis?
- common in moisture where alot of friction and contact is common
- common in extremeties and trunk
- in a ring shaped appearance (redish brownish) and clear border
- treat with topical antifungal creams
what is tinea pedis?
- most common fungal infection
- on feet, in and around toes
- moist is trapped when sweating in shoes
- treatment with antifungal creams and promote proper foot hygiene
what is herpes simplex?
- a strain of virus associated wirh akin and mucous membran infection
- type 1: extragenital
- type 2: genitals
- highly contagious
- early indication: tingling and hypersensitivity in affected area
- vesicles generally ruptures in 1-3 days, splitting our serous material that will form into yellowish crust
what is herpes zoster?
- shingles
- dormant chickenpox virus
