Introductions to organisations and theoretical history
Organisation definition
an organisation is a social agreement for achieving controlled performance on pursuit of collective goals.
- many people working towards the same goal
- not only financial rewards but also a shared sense of purpose.
organisational performance
The performance of an organization determines its survival.
Individual performance
The performance of individuals determines their pay and promotion prospects.
departmental performance
how teams are performing and how those smaller teams then relate to the organisational performance.
3 key things that tell us when something is an organisation
- social arrangements
- collective goals
- controlled performances
ineffective performance are usually tracked back to issues of
- management and leadership practices

- procedures, planning and risk management

organisations can be associated with a range of different metaphors associated with organisations e.g. machines, organisms, brains, cultures (shape a society)
organisational behaviour
Is the study of the structure and management of organizations, their environments, and the actions and interactions of their individual members and groups. It mainly concerns organisations, the people in them, and the behaviours that evolve between the two.
- each individual working for the organisation is unique with their own ideas and concepts. Org’s are not just shaping the people who work in them.
why study organisational behaviour
central debate: “Organizations do not behave. Only people can be said to behave”
Is OB an outdated concept? Are there are any implications for the future of work and organizations?
Organisations are not just shaping the people who work in them but also those who are outside the them, people like us. They are powerful institutions and arguably shapers of society;
