steps managers should take to lead successful change Flashcards
John P Kotter
created an 8 step model which provides a structured approach to leading successful change within organisations
steps outlined by Kotter
1) create a sense of urgency for change
2) build a guiding coalition
3) form a strategic vision
4) communicate the vision
5) empower action
6) create quick wins
7) build on the change
8) make it stick
1) create a sense of urgency for change
- convince people that change is necessary
challenge:
- overcoming a culture of compliance = challenging as some employees may resist change if they perceive current state as satisfactory
2) build a guiding coalition
- assemble a team of influential individuals to lead the change
- ensure coalition has a shared vision and commitment to the change
challenges: - existing power dynamics or resistence from key individuals can hinder the formation of a unified coalition
3) form a strategic vision
- develop a clear vison of the future
- create strategies aligned with the vision
challenges:
resistance may occur if the vision is not understood or seems unattainable
4) communicating the vision
clearly communicate the vision throughout the organization
challenges:
- inadequate communication is a common pitfall. leaders may think they communicated the vision clearly but different stakeholders may interpret it differently
5) empower action
remove obstacles and empower employees to take action
- encourage risk taking
challenges:
giving employees the authority to act can be met with resistance from those who prefer the status quo or fear the unknown
6) create quick wins
create visible short-term successes that align with the overall vision
- celebrating achievements boosts morale
challenges:
identifying and achieving quick successes is challenging and failure to do so = demotivation
7) build on the change
reinforce and build upon successful changes
challenges:
declaring victory too soon or not reinforcing the changes and lead to relapse of bad habbits
8) make it stick
change becomes part of organisational culture
- reinfoce new behaviours, values and paractices to prevent return to old ways
challenges:
- sustaining change over long time is difficult.
- organsation may revert to old patterns unless new approaches are deeply ingrained.
