Tissues Flashcards
1
Q
Cell Junctions / 3 Types
A
-Points of contact between adjacent cells- seen in epitheial tissue, nervous and muscle cells
1- Tight Junctions
2- Anchoring Junctions
3- Gap Junctions
2
Q
Tight Junctions
A
- Is a cell junction
- partial fusion of specific proteins in the lateral surface of cell membrane
- Prevents material from passing between cells
3
Q
Anchoring Junctions
A
- Proteins that fasten cells to each other and/or extracellular material
- “rivet’ together
- Ex. desmosomes
4
Q
Gap Junction
A
- open channels through the adjacent cell membranes to interconnect cytosols of cell
- Allows ions/small molecules to pass between cells
- Allows tissue to work as a unit (cardiac and smooth muscle)
5
Q
Epithelial Tissue
A
Lining tissue
- Covers body/ organ cavities (organ cavity = lumen)
- Has one free surface
- little extracellular space between cells
- avascular- no blood vessels
6
Q
Connective Tissue
A
Connecting Tissue
7
Q
Muscle Tissue
A
Contractile Tissue -Subtypes: 1- Skeletal (Striated) 2- Cardiac (Striated) 3- Smooth (non-striated
8
Q
Nervous Tissue
A
Signalling Tissue
-Cell types:
1- Neuron- conduct electrical impulses
2- Glial Cells - Support and protect neurons
