Tissues Flashcards
What are the 4 types of tissue?
Epithelial
Connective
Nerve
Muscle
What are the three types of cell-cell junstions?
Desmosomes
Tight junctions
Gap junctions
What is a desmosome?
Firm anchorage, non waterproof cell-cell junction
What is a tight junction?
Cell- cell junction which seals intercellular spaces
What is a gap junction?
Cell- Cell junction for cell communication
What is a hemi-desmosome?
Junction between cell and basement lamina
What are the roles of the epithelial tissue?
Covering surfaces If thin- For diffusion of substances It thick- For protection Movement - Cilia Absorption -Microvilli
What are the three types of epithelial cell?
Squamous, Cuboidal and Columnar
What is the difference between simple and stratified epithelial layers?
Simple epithelial layers are one cell thick
Stratified epithelial layers are multiple cells thick.
What are glands?
Collections of secretory (mostly) epithelial cells
What is the difference between exocrine and endocrine glands?
Exocrine glands secrete onto surfaces
Endocrine glands secrete into the blood
How do endocrine glands form?
Cells proliferate to form a mass of secretory cells which loose contact with the surface and accumulate around a blood vessel.
How do exocrine glands form?
The epithelial layer is encouraged to invaginate, creating a tube.
What is the difference between tubular and acinar glands
Both are simple
Tubular glands are long thin invaginations that produce watery secretion
Acinar glands are short, grape like glands that produce a mucus secretion.
What is meant by the term compound gland?
Contains both tubular and acinar glands.
