Skin Flashcards
What are the two skin layers?
Dermis and Epidermis
What is the role of the hypodermis?
This adipose layer anchors skin to underlying structures
What are the four cell types which compose the epidermis?
Keratinocytes
Melanocytes
Merkel
Langerhans
What is the role of the epidermis?
Prevents water loss by evaportaion
What are the 5 layers of the epidermis?
Corneum Lucidum Granulosm Spinosm Basale
What tissue type is the epidermis layer?
Stratified squamous epithelium
What is keratinisation?
The process whereby keratin is deposited in cells causing them to become rough
What are the two layers of the dermis layer of skin?
Papillary layer and reticular layer
What is the difference between the papillary layer and reticular layer of the dermis?
Papillary layer is cellular containing loose connective tissue
The reticular layer is fibrous containing dense irregular connective tissue.
Name the muscle attached to hair follicles and name its purpose.
Arrector pili muscle
Connected to base of hair follicle so that when muscle contracts, hair straightens
What type of glands are eccrine sweat glands?
Simple tubular glands, releasing watery secretion of sweat for thermoregulation.
What structures/ accessories of the skin allow thermoregulation?
- Sweat glands
- Dilation of blood vessels
- Hair follicles
