Proteins Flashcards
What is the R group on glycine?
H
What is the R group on alanine?
CH3
What is a peptide bond?
Covalent bond formed between the amino group of one amino acid and the carboxyl group of another, involving the elimination of a H20 molecule.
At what part of a cell should a peptide bond form?
At the ribosomes
What is the primary structure of a protein?
Sequence of amino acids in the polypeptide chain
What is the secondary structure of a protein?
The bending/ folding of the primary structure into an alpha helix or beta pleated sheet.
Also defined as the spatial arrangement of amino acid residues which are near each other on the linear chain
What is the tertiary structure of a protein?
The spatial arrangement of amino acid residues which are far apart on the linear chain.
Held in place by hydrogen bonds, disulphide bridges, ionic interactions, hydrophobic interactions and Van der Waal forces.
What is the quaternary structure of a protein?
This is the spatial arrangement of individual polypeptide chains in a multi sub unit protein.
Which structure of a protein will not be affected by denaturation?
Primary- due to strong peptide bonds
What is the difference between fibrous and globular proteins?
Globular proteins are water soluble and have their function in metabolic reactions.
Fibrous proteins are non water soluble and have their function in structure and support.
Where do glycoproteins form?
ER and Golgi Apparatus
What are the roles of glycoproteins?
Protein stabilisation Protein orientation Signalling Cell recognition Affect solubility
What is the function of lipoproteins?
The transport of water insoluble fats and cholesterol in the blood
