tissues Flashcards
cells
-smallest structural and functional unit of an organism
-cytoplasm enclosed by membrane
-makes extracellular matrix
tree types of muscle tissue
-smooth
-skeletal
-cardiac
skeletal muscle tissue
-striated
-extremely long, cylinder-shaped
-multinucleated, peripheral nuclei
-sarcomere is composed of actin and myosin filaments. NS wants muscle to contract so myo head attaches to actin filaments. pulling them to the sarcomere
cardiac muscle
-striated
-has sarcomeres but not as long
-elongated, branching
-one central nucleus (occasionally 2) per cell
-intercalated disks
how to tell something is a cardiac muscle form only looking at a image
-intercalated disc
-look for line dividing cells which is actually a double membrane
-has desmosomes (welds) and gap junctions (intracellular ion channel)
-these features increase speed of impulse conduction so cardiac muscle cells can contract as one unit
smooth muscle tissue
-nonstriated
-spindle shaped
-once central nucleus per nucleus cell
-still have act and myo just no sarcomeres
epithelial tissue
-covers surface, lines cavities, forms glands
-cells and extracellular matrix
-cells held together by tight junctions, adherens junctions, and desmosomes
-cells attach to a special type of ECM called a basement membrane
-separates cells from underlying connective tissue
what are epithelial tissues classified according to
-numbers of cell layers-simple vs stratified
-cell shape- squamous, cuboidal, columnar, transitional
endothelium
-simple squamous epithelium lined lumen of all blood vessels
-called endothelium
-part of tunica interna
-endothelium also lines heart chambers
-part of endocardium
