bones Flashcards
function of bones
-support body
-facilitate movement
-protect organs and tissues
-store minerals and fat
-produce blood cells
bone classification by shape
-short
-long
-flat
-irregular
-seasamoid
two different parts of the skeleton
axial (everything from central bone)
appendicular (shoulder and limbs)
paired vs unpaired bones in skull
only one for unpaired
cranium vs face bones
every thing around the brain vs the actual face
dermatocranium vs chondrocranium
The chondrocranium and the pharyngeal skeleton compose the endoskeleton in the skull and the lower jaw. It is initially (ontogenetically or phylogenetically) formed as cartilage and, when ossified, consists of cartilage bone and/or membrane bone. This is in contrast with the dermatocranium that ossifies as dermal bone.
brachy, mesatice, dolichocephalic
B: short, wide headed
M: head of med proportions
D: long, narrow headed
different kinds of vertebrae
cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, caudal
what is a true rib
a rib that connects to the sternum
bones of the appendicular skeleton
gridle bones
limb bones
is the number of ribs, vertebrae, and sternebrae same in all animals
no
how do you count toe digets
medial to lateral
what number toes to cows and horses have
cows have 3 and 4, horses have 3
what are some appendicular adaptions in cursorial mammals
-reduced or absent clavicles
-elongated distal limb bone
-digitigrade or unguligrade posture
-fused, reduced, and/or absent limb bones (weight reduction and stability)
what do digitigrade and unguligrade postures mean
-digitigrade means on digests
-unguligrade means on nails
