Tissues Flashcards
What is a tissue?
Specialised cells working together to perform particular function(s)
What are the 4 types of tissues?
- Epithelial
- Muscular
- Nervous
- Connective
What is the function of Epithelial Tissue?
It lines body surfaces, tubules and cavities for protection, absorption and secretion.
What is the 4 structural differences in Epithelial Tissue?
- Simple Squamous (One layer, flat)
- Simple Cuboidal (One layer, square)
- Simple Columnar (One layer, columns)
- Pseudostratified Columnar (One layer but looks like multiple, columns)
Where can Simple Squamous Epithelial Tissue be found?
In the alveoli to allow substances to diffuse across
Where can Simple Cuboidal Epithelial Tissue be found?
It lines the kidney tubules to allow diffusion and secretion of molecules
Where can Simple Columnar Epithelial Tissue be found?
It lines the small intestines to allow for nutrient absorption and secretions of substances such as mucus
Where can Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelial Tissue be found?
It lines the trachea to allow impurities to be swept towards the throat due to secretion of mucus
What are the two types of Connective Tissues?
- Loose Connective Tissue
- Dense Connective Tissue
What are the Specialised Connective Tissues?
- Cartilage
- Bone
- Blood
