Tissue Engineering Flashcards
Tissue engineering
Our ability to CELL CULTURE
our ability to build materials that are BIOCOMPATIBLE
Purpose of cell culture
understand what cells are going to when we maintain outside of the body
autologous
donor to donor
-immune acceptable
allogeneic
donor to recipient
-same species
syngeneic
genetically identical donor
-homozynous twin
xenogeneic
cross-species
-animal cells present in human patient
Stem cells
undifferentiated cells with the ability to divide in culture and give rise to different forms of specialized cells
How are tissue cultures done?
On a petri dish or bioreactor
Bioreactor
to simulate the bodies conditions
-any device that supports a biologically active environment
Xenogenetic Transplant
The donor and the recipient are memebers of different species (xenograft)
Allogenic transplant
donor and recipient are the same species but are not genetically identical
(allograft)
Autologous Transplant
Cells from patient being isolated and given back to the same recipient (autograft)
Bone marrow
Bodys main blood cell factory
Bone marrow transplant
The purpose is to put healthy stem cells in place of unhealthy ones
-If bone marrow does not work correctly the person can become very ill (leukemia)
Level 1 complexity of tissue engineering
Flat structures that are made up of just 1 type of cell
