1. the hu man body is translucent to x-rays of the correct wavelength + corresponding energy
   - the rays pass through the body, but as they penetrate they are partially absorbed
   -the more tissue there is in the path of x-rays, the greater the fraction of radiation that is absorbed and there fore more visible on imaging
2. x-rays have the ability to expose photographic film
