Respiratory system Flashcards
Functions of the respiratory system
-ventilate the lungs
-extract oxygen from the air and transfer it to the bloodstream
-maintain the acid base balamce of the blood
What composes inspired gas?
79% oxygen
20% O2
0.04% CO2
Water vapor/ trace gases
What composes expired gas?
79% oxygen
16% O2
4% CO2
water vapor/trace gases
How does gas exchange occur?
gas exchange occurs by diffusion
Gas exchange
capillaries cover each alveolus
-carry deoxygenated blood to the alveolus and oxygenated blood away (capillary walls are thin)
-oxygen moves from the alveoli into the blood (opposite for CO2)
Ficks law: The direction and movement of gas depends on…
-partial pressure of the gas in the blood and extra cellular fluid
-surface area avaliable for diffusion
-the thickness of the membrane the gas must go through
-diffusion constant of the gas
Obstructive lung disease
conditions that make it hard to exhale all the air in the lungs
-main symptom is shortness of breath
Restrictive lung disease
difficulty expanding their lungs with air
-main symptom is shortness of breath
COPD
Chronic obstructive pulmoary disease
-chronic bronchitis and asthma
Flow volume loops
-cut in half
-whole
-small
-obstructive
-normal
-restrictive
