tides Flashcards
how are tides produced
tides are produced by the gravitational pull of the moon and the sound
as the moon orbits the earth, high tides follow it
the moon pulls water towards it - opposite budge on each side of earth
when does the highest tide occur
when the moon and the sun are aligned - as gravitational pull is at its strongest
happens twice a month results in spring tides
when are the lowest tides
twice a month when the moon and sun are at right angles to each other
gravitational pull is at its weakest
produces neap tides with low range
where are tidal ranges low
in enclosed seas - as wave action is restricted to a narrow area of land
where are tidal ranges higher
in places where the coast is funnelled - estuaries
