Tick-borne encephalitis Flashcards
The tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) vaccine is a (live/inactivated) vaccine
inactivated
Contains inactivated TBE virus (Neudorfl strain) grown in chick embryo cells
Who is recommended to get the tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) vaccine? (3)
- Individuals who travel, particularly in spring and summer, to endemic forested areas where ticks are most prevalent
- Individuals who will be residing in an area where TBE is endemic or epidemic, especially those working in forestry, woodcutting, farming and the military
- Laboratory workers who may be exposed to the TBE virus
How many doses of the tick-borne encephalitis vaccine are recommended for children aged 1 year and over, and for adults?
3 doses
- 2 doses are sufficient for the ongoing tick season.
- 3 doses provide protection for at least 3 years
Boosters are required every 3-5 years for those still at risk
How many doses of the tick-borne encephalitis vaccine are required to provide sufficient protection for one tick season (the current/ongoing season)?
2 doses
BUT 3 doses are recommended:
- 2 doses are sufficient for the ongoing tick season.
- 3 doses provide protection for at least 3 years
If a patient has 3 doses of the tick-borne encephalitis vaccine, how many years protection will they have?
At least 3 years
BUT 3 doses are recommended:
- 2 doses are sufficient for the ongoing tick season.
- 3 doses provide protection for at least 3 years
Boosters are required every 3-5 years for those still at risk
If an individual has a prolonged risk of tick-borne encephalitis exposure, how often should they receive a booster of the tick-borne encephalitis vaccine?
Every 3-5 years
Is there a specific therapy following exposure to tick-borne encephalitis?
NO
Supportive treatment can significantly reduce morbidity and mortality
