What do the thyroid hormones do?
Increase metabolism and increase SNS activity. They also have an impact on every cell in the body.
What are some effects of thyroid hormones?
Increase HR and SV, increase in protein metabolism, increase in fat metabolism, increase in appetite and reduced glucose tolerance.
Hyperthyroid - what sources can it come from? (2 E’s)
Endogenous - Inside
Exogenous - outside, like drugs, synthetic, etc.
What is Grave’s disease?
Excessive hyperthyroidism
What is thyrotoxicosis ?
Very high thyroid level.
What will we find in a physical assessment for hyperthyroidism?
Increased BP/HR, jittery, warm skin, peach fuzz on the skin, more shit’s, protruding eyes, etc.
Iodine - needed to produced thyroid hormone. T/F?

For hyperthyroidism, we need to limit light stimulation, promote sleep and promote physical comfort. T/F?

What are some of the treatment options for hyperthyroidism?
Thionamides, Radioactive iodine therapy, beta blockers for symptom management, surgery etc.
Thyroid Storm - what happens?
VERY high thyroid level, there will be fever, tachycardia, HTN, n/v, tremor, seizure - if this all happens, it’s a CODE!
Hypothyroidism - what are some causes?
Removal or destruction of thyroid tissue (most common), disruption of thyroid hormone production and secondary issues (pituitary/hypothalamus?)
Thyroid Deficiency - what happens with metabolism and cardiovascular system?
Everything goes down! So, they will be cold, have decreased vitals, low RR, will be sluggish, etc.
How do we treat hypothyroidism?
Hormone replacement, symptom management.
What is a myxedema Coma?
Mucousy edema (Myxedema) and then it clogs up the brain and it swells and wham.
