Cranial Nerves - Unit 3 Flashcards
1 - Name and info
Olfactory - it’s in the nose. Smellllllll! Coffee is a great tool to test this.

Optic - eyes! Central and peripheral vision.
Test eye one at a time. Have patient look at your nose and ask them if they notice movement outside of that gaze.

Oculomotor - pupillary constriction.
Test pupils!

Trochlear - moves the eyes down! Have patient follow your finger as you move it toward the nose.

Trigeminal - covers most of the face - Check sensation in the forehead, cheek or jaw.

Abducens - eye movement to the sides.
Look toward each ear - have the patient follow your fingers through the size cardinal gazes. Or draw an X in the air with a line through it and see if the patient has any twitching/nystagmus.

Facial - facial movements and expression. Have the patient move their face and make faces, etc.

Acoustic nerve - ears/hearing. Check hearing

Glossopharyngeal (8) and vagus nerve (9). These are for the tongue and throat. Taste and have them say ahhhh!

Spinal accessory nerve - controls neck and shoulder. Have the patient move their shoulders and such.

Hypoglossal nerve - innervates the tongue. Assess swallowing, etc.
