whole gland is smoothly enlarged and overactive; autoimmune; antibodies bind to and stimulate TSH receptor in thyroid gland; cause goitre and hyperthyroidism; other antibodies bind to muscles behind eye causing exophthalmos; other antibodies stimular growth of shins causing pretibial myxoedema (hypertrophy)
