principles of endocrinology Flashcards
hormone synthesis: recall the principle stages of protein and steroid hormone synthesis, storage, and mechanism of secretion
how are protein/polypeptide hormones synthesised: pro-hormone to hormone
pro-hormone packaged into vesicle; transported to Golgi apparatus where processed by proteolytic enzymes; broken down to mature active hormone; wait until signal for exocytosis (regulated secretion)
how fast are peptide hormones broken down and cleared from the blood stream
relatively fast
which blood vessels are pituitary hormones secreted into
pituitary capillary
how are steroid hormones synthesised: cholesterol liberation to mitochondria
esterase liberates cholesterol from fatty acid esters within adrenal gland cells; taken into mitochondria by StAR protein (rate limiting step)
why are steroid hormones not stored in cells
too lipid soluble, hence stored in bloodstream
