What is vuvlovaginal candidiasis?
symptomatic inflammation of the vagina and/or vulva caused by a superficial fungal infection
What is the most common cause of genital thrush?
Candida albicans
How is acute vuvlovaginal candidiasis treated?
-Oral fluconazole or itraconazole
OR
-Intravaginal imidazole pessary or cream
Topical anti fungal cream for vulvitis
What are some predisposing factors to recurrent vuvlovaginal candidiasis?
-recent (up to 3 months before) antibacterial therapy
-poorly controlled diabetes mellitus
-pregnancy
-immunosuppression
-HRT use
-possibly oral contraceptive use
What’s the treatment for recurrent vuvlovaginal candidiasis?
-oral fluconazole to ensure clinical remission
-maintenance regimen for 6 months
What are some symptoms of thrush?
-Itching, burning, or pain in the vaginal and vulval areas
-A thick, white or yellow discharge
-Redness and swelling of the labia
-Painful sex or urination
-Bleeding between periods or after sex
-Needing to urinate more often
-A rash or blisters on the vulva
