Throat Flashcards
What are the functions of the oral cavity?
Digestion
Communication
Breathing
What are the 2 parts of the oral cavity?
Oral vestibule
Oral cavity proper
What is the oral vestibule?
Bit between the lips and the teeth
What controls the diameter of the oral vestibule?
Muscles of facial expression
Principally the orbiculairs oris
Where does the oral vestibule communicate with the oral cavity proper?
Space behind the 3rd molar
What are the 2 parts of the oral roof?
Hard palate
Soft palate
Where is the hard palate found?
Found anteriorly
What is the hard palate?
Composed of the palatine bone
Separates the oral cavity from nasal cavity
Where is the soft palate found?
Posteriorly of the oral roof
What type of structure does the soft palate have?
Muscular
What is the purpose of the soft palate during swallowing?
Can elevate to separate the nasopharynx from the oropharynx during swallowing
Where does the parotid duct open into?
Opposite the upper 2nd molar
Which muscle does the parotid duct pierce?
Pierces the buccinator muscle
What are the 2 lobes of the submandibular gland?
Superficial and deep lobes
Which muscle separates the superficial and deep love of the submandibular gland
Mylohyoid muscle
Which muscle does the submandibular gland lie superiorly to?
Digastric muscle
What are the functions of the oral cavity?
Taste Mastication Speech Digestion Swallowing
What tissue is the tongue composed of?
Skeletal muscle
What is the tongue covered by?
Mucous membrane
Which structure splits the tongue into 2 parts?
Sulcus Terminalis
Which nerve supplies sensation to the anterior 2/3 of the tongue?
Lingual branch of V3
Which nerve supplies taste sensation to the anterior 2/3 of the tongue?
Chorda tympani
From which branchial arch does the anterior 2/3 of the tongue develop from?
1st branch
From which branchial arch does the posterior 1.4 of the tongue develop from?
3rd branchial arch
Which nerve supplies bot sensory and taste of the posterior 1/3 of the tongue?
CN IX
Which are the most numerous papillae?
Filiform papillae
Which papillae does not contain taste buds?
Filiform papillae
What are filiform papillae used for?
Sensation of the tongue
Which papillae are scattered through the dorsum of the tongue?
Fungiform papillae
Which papillae are mostly concentrated at the tip of the tongue?
Fungiform
Which papillae distinguish the 5 tastes?
Fungiform
Where are the Circumvallate Papillae placed?
In a row just anterior to the sulcus terminalis
What are the 2 groups of muscles in the tongue?
Intrinsic
Extrinsic
Are the intrinsic muscles of the tongue attached to bone?
No
What do intrinsic muscle of the tongue alter?
Alter shape
What do extrinsic muscles of the tongue alter?
Tongue position
Where do extrinsic muscle originate from and extend to?
Originate from bone and extend to the bone
What is the nerve supply to the muscles of the tongue?
CN XII Hypoglossal
Except palatoglossus
Which nerve supplies the palatoglossus?
CN X (vagus)
What are the main muscles of mastication?
Masseter
Temporalis
Lateral and medial pterygoid
What is the innervation of muscles of mastication?
CNV3
What is the pharynx?
Muscular tube that connects the nssal cavities to the larynx and oesophagus
What are the 3 parts of the pharynx?
Naso
Oro
Laryngo pharynx
Where is the oropharynx located?
Between soft palate and the superior border of the epiglottis
What is the oropharynx involved in?
The voluntary and involuntary phases of swallowing
What are the boundaries of the oropharynx?
Lower border of the soft palate
Superior border of epiglottis
Palatoglossal arch to posterior pharyngeal wall
Lateral - faucial pillar and palatine tonsils
Describe the oral phase of swallowing
Tongue propels the bolus into the pharynx
Triggers swallowing reflex
Describe the Pharyngeal phase of swallowing
Soft palate at back of tongue pulled upwards- covers the nasopharynx
Epiglottis covers the larynx, vocal cord approximate, larynx moves upward
Upper oesophageal sphincter (UOS) relaxes
Respiration is reflex inhibited
Describe the oesophageal phase of swallowing
Once bolus passed UOS, the sphinter constricts
Bolus propelled downwards by peristaltic motion, reflex via myenteric plexus
In which compartment of the neck is the larynx found?
Anteriorly
In the visceral compartment
Between which levels does the larynx spand?
C3-C6
With which structure does the larynx continue with inferiorly?
Trachea

Supraglottis
Glottis
Subglottic
What are cartilages of the larynx?
Thyroid
Arytenoid
Cricoic
Corniculate
Which cartilage of the larynx is paired?
Arytenoid
Which cartilage of the larynx creates a C shape?
Cricoid
What is the function of the extrinsic muscles of the larynx?
Move entire laryngeal complex
What is the function of the intrinsic muscles of the larynx?
Regulate movements of the vocal cords
What is the N. supply of the motor innervation of the larynx?
Recurrent laryngeal n.
