Thoracic Cavity/Pleural Cavity Flashcards
Thoracic Cavity
cavity within thorax. from thoracic inlet to cranial aspect of diaphagm
Thorax
body region contained by rib cage
Thoracic Inlet
- cranial opening of thoracic cavity
- 1st thoracic vertebra, 1st pair ribs, 1st sternebra (manubrium)
- where trachea, esophogas, etc enter
Thoracic Outlet
- caudal opening
- last thoracic vertebraa, last pr ribs, costal arch, xyphoid process (last sternebra)
Sternal Ribs
1st 8-9 ribs
directly attach to sternum individually
Asternal Ribs
ribs 10-12 in dog.
unite in costal area
Floating Rib
13th rib in dogs. not attached to anything.
Thoracic m.
attach to rib cage
Pleura
serous membrane that lines thoracic cavity
Pleural Cavity
within thoracic cavity. lined by pleura
- contains no organs
- has negative pressure
- has closed, potential space/cavity
Serous Membrane
- epithelial membrane
- line interior body cavities (thorax = pleura, abdomin = peritoneum)
- secretes serous fluid
Serous Fluid
thin, watery fluid.
Purpose = to lubricate
should only be a few drops in the pleural cavities.
Negative Pressure in Pleural Cavity
2-5 mmHg.
Purpose = keep lungs against ribs.
(think H2O b/n 2 slides. cant pull apart but can slide across each other)
Mediastinum
has no serous fluid in healthy animals.
Visceral Pleura
in thoracity cavity it lines the lungs.
aka Pulmonary pleura
