Thoracic Inlet

A
  • cranial opening of thoracic cavity
  • 1st thoracic vertebra, 1st pair ribs, 1st sternebra (manubrium)
  • where trachea, esophogas, etc enter

Q

Pleural Cavity

A

within thoracic cavity. lined by pleura

  • contains no organs
  • has negative pressure
  • has closed, potential space/cavity

Q

Serous Membrane

A
  • epithelial membrane
  • line interior body cavities (thorax = pleura, abdomin = peritoneum)
  • secretes serous fluid

Q

Serous Fluid

A

thin, watery fluid.
Purpose = to lubricate
should only be a few drops in the pleural cavities.

Q

Negative Pressure in Pleural Cavity

A

2-5 mmHg.
Purpose = keep lungs against ribs.
(think H2O b/n 2 slides. cant pull apart but can slide across each other)

15
Q

Parietal Pleural

A

lines outer walls of thoracic cavity

Type 1: Costal Pleura
Type 2: Mediastinal Pleura
Type 3: Diaphragmatic Pleura

16
Q

Costal Pleura

A

Portion of pleura against RIB CAGE

bones & intercostal m.

17
Q

Mediastinal Pleura

A

just comes down middle of thoracic cavity

18
Q

Diphragmatic Pleura

A

lines the diaphragm in thoracic cavity

19
Q

Connecting Pleura

A

connects visceral pluera and mediastinal pleura

aka PULMONARY LIG.

20
Q

Types of Pleura

A
  1. Visceral Pleura
  2. Parietal Pleura
  3. Connecting Pleura
21
Q

Why are the 2 pleural cavities in dogs/cats considered as 1 entity in practice?

A

The mediastinum is so thin (simple squamous) that what happens in 1 pleural cavity affects the other 1 too. [ex: one fills with air or liquid, it quickly diffuses to the other pleural cavity]. THEREFORE, must treat entire thoracic cavity as 1 entity.
