Thermochemistry Test (5-13-16) Flashcards
The heat content of a system at a constant pressure
Enthalpy
An insulated container, similar to a thermos, in which a thermometer detects the temperature change that occurs during chemical reaction
Calorimeter
The branch of Science that studies the transfer of energy during chemical reactions or phase changes
Thermochemistry
A Meausred reading in Celcius or kelvins
Temperature
Measures the total amount of thermal energy transferred from one substance to another
Heat
The standard SI unit of work and can be used to measure any kind of energy
Joules
Heat that produces a measurable change in temperature
Sensible heat
Heat that produces a phase change but no temperature change
Latent heat
The quantity of heat required to melt one mole of a solid to a liquid with no temperature change
Molar enthalpy of fusion
The amount of heat required to convert a mole of a liquid at its boiling point to its vapor at the same temperature
Molar enthalpy of vaporization
The study of the rates of reactions and the steps by which they occur
Kinetics
Requires (1) particles must collide before they can react, (2) properly oriented for the necessary rearrangement of atoms and electrons, and (3) forceful enough
Collision theory
The minimum amount of kinetic energy that must be possessed by the colliding of molecules before they can react
Activation energy
Tells how fast reactants can change into products
Reaction rates
A substance that changes a reaction rate without being permanently changed of consumed
Catalysts
