What is this school of Buddhism known as?
The school of the elders.
Where is it mainly practiced?
Thailand, Sri Lanka, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar.
What is full orientation of Theravada Buddhism reserved for?
Men.
What is the Buddha seen as?
The main focus of commitment and is one of the Greek refuges.
What to members of Theravada devote their lives to?
To following the path of enlightenment.
What are the numbers of rules members of Theravada Buddhists must follow?
Not to own anything.
Not to have sexual relationships.
They can never be offensive to anyone.
What do they have a particular focus on?
Meditation. They believe that commitment to the Buddha and the Eightfold Path will bring good Kamma - their goal is to achieve enlightenment and reach nibbana.
What do they believe about Kamma?
They can share their own good fortune with other people, by transferring the Kamma they have gained to someone else.
This transfer of Kamma is particularly important when someone has died. If this happens, family and friends may gather around whoever has died and transfer their Kamma to him or her. In the hope that this will help the dead person to have a favourable rebirth.
What do they believe about the Buddha?
That he was a historical person and has now ceased to exist.
