Therapeutic Use/ MOA: COPD & Asthma Flashcards
Therapeutic Use: Prevents or treats bronchospasm in people with asthma or COPD or exercise- induced bronchospasm. QUICK relief for emergencies!
MOA: Selectively binds to beta2-adrenergic receptors in bronchial smooth muscle to cause
bronchodilation. “Fight or Flight”
Short-Acting Beta-2 Agonists (SABA)
Therapeutic Use: Treats asthma and COPD to prevent bronchospasm. For prevention of symptoms NOT for emergencies!
MOA: Selectively binds to beta2- adrenergic receptors in bronchial smooth muscle to cause bronchodilation.
Long-acting Beta-2 Agonists (LABA)
Therapeutic Use: Both short and long- acting used for maintenance therapy of bronchoconstriction associated with asthma, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. For prevention of symptoms NOT for emergencies!
MOA: Blocks the action of acetylcholine in bronchial smooth muscle which reduces bronchoconstrictive substance release.
Anticholinergics
Therapeutic Use: Decrease inflammation of the airway to prevent asthma attacks. For prevention of symptoms NOT for emergencies!
MAO: Locally acting anti-inflammatory and immune modifier
Inhaled Steroids
Therapeutic Use: Used for long-term control of asthma, decreasing acute asthma attacks, & for exercise induced bronchospasm. Also used for allergic rhinitis. For prevention of symptoms NOT for emergencies!
MOA: Blocks leukotriene receptors and decreases inflammation.
Leukotriene Receptor Antagonists
