Therapeutic Use: Both generations are used for allergy management and the congestion from the common cold.
MOA: Blocks histamine at H1 receptors.
Antihistamines (H1 Receptor Antagonists)
Therapeutic Use: Relieves nasal obstruction due to inflammation
MOA: Acts directly on the adrenergic receptors by releasing norepinephrine which produces
vasoconstriction (sympathetic nervous system stimulation- sympathomimetic).
Decongestants
Therapeutic Use: Decreases dry, hacking, nonproductive cough
MOA: Depresses the cough center in the
medulla oblongata or the cough receptors in the throat, trachea, or lungs elevating the threshold for coughing.
Antitussives
Therapeutic Use: Used for a productive cough and for loosening mucus from the respiratory tract
MOA: Used for a productive cough and for loosening mucus from the respiratory tract
