Theories Of Learning Flashcards
What is positive reinforcement
Uses reinforcement to ensure correct response is repeated
What’s an example of operant conditioning
Giving praise if a player plays a good pass
What’s the advantages of operant conditioning
Encourages them to repeat skill, Gives confidence
Can correct negative behaviour
What’s the disadvantages of operant conditioning
Can demotivate if constantly corrected, If not used correctly it can encourage negative behaviour
What is Observational learning
Behaviour that can be taught by watching others
What are the 4 stages of observational learning
Attention, Retention, Motor production, Motivation
What’s an example of Observational learning
Doing a demonstration of the skill so the performer can copy
What is the impact of learning on operant conditioning
POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT- Keep doing that behaviour
NEGATIVE REINFORCEMENT- Stops them doing that behaviour
What’s the impact of learning on Observational learning
Performers can watch skill in chunks so it’s easier to recall and perform
What are the advantages of observational learning
Can use rewards as positive feedback.
Break down the demonstration into chunks
What are the disadvantages of observational learning
Must be accurate.
Must be relevant to skill level of performer watching
What’s the social development theory
Learning by association from more knowledgeable others
What are the 2 types of the social development theory
Inter psychological- Learning from others externally.
Intra psychological- Learning from within after gaining knowledge from others
What is an example of the social development theory
What can I do alone
What can I do with help
What can’t I do yet
What is the impact on learning on the social development theory
Builds learning in stages based on current level of performance
What’s the advantages of the social development theory
Build up in stages
Learning quicker as you learn from MKO
What’s the disadvantages of the social development theory
Unaware of what you can’t do
What is insight learning
Uses experience and understanding to solve problems relating to the whole skill
What’s an example of insight learning
A high jumper performing the whole skill to enable them to decide the best technique for them e.g. which foot to take off from.
What’s the impact on learning on insight learning
It allows performers to adapt the skill to what’s best for them
What’s the advantages of insight learning
- -Promotes stronger understanding of skill
- -Reflects more realistic situations linked to games
- -Provides intrinsic motivation
- -Encourages performers to think for themselves
What’s the disadvantages on insight learning
Novice in cognitive stage of learning might not have enough experience and knowledge to generate solution to problem
