Response Time Flashcards
Define reaction time
The time taken from the onset of a stimulus to the onset of a response
Define movement time
Time taken to complete the task
Define response time
Time taken from the onset of the stimulus to the completion of a task
Reaction time+movement time= response time
Simple response time
Has one specific response to one stimulus
Define choice reaction
Has more than one stimulus to choose from and maybe more than one response to make
What is Hicks law
States that as the number of choices increases, so does the reaction time
What’s an example of Hicks law
Serving in tennis, you can mix serves with direction or slice so the opponent doesn’t know what to expect. Leading to a delay in reaction time of opponent
What is the single channel hypothesis
States that stimuli can only be processed one at a time. So a stimulus must wait for the first to be processed.
Delay in processing a second stimulus increases response time
What is the psychological refractory period
Explains the delay that occurs because we can only prices one stimulus at a time
A delay even a second stimulus is presented before the first has been processed
A performer night freeze completely while conflicting information is sorted out.
Define anticipation
Pre-judging a stimulus
Define temporal anticipation
WHEN it’s going to happen
Define spatial anticipation
WHERE and WHAT is going to happen
How do you improve response time
Mental practice
Train to specific stimulus
Selective attention so stimulus is picked up early
Improve fitness levels
