When a beginner is doing a complex task and need to concentrate on one part of the skill to get this part right

Practicing the first part of the skill, then adding parts gradually. Linking sub-routines or parts of a task

Helps create specific images that can be stored as a motor programme which is stored in long term memory
Is more realistic, helps to produce positive transfer of skills in transfer and in games

Could be fatigue if task is done with no break
