Information Processing Flashcards
Define information processing
The methods by which data from the environment are collected and utilised
What are the steps of information processing
1) Input
1. 5) Filtering process
2) Perceptual mechanism
3) Translatory mechanism
4) Effector mechanism
5) Feedback
Define selective attention
Following relevant information from irrelevant information
What’s an example of selective attention
Filtering out crowd noise for a penalty kick in football
Describe the input stage
Information collected from display using what your can see, hear, feel and balance from interoceptors
E.G. A sense in your body to take deeper breathes if too much CO2 in body
Describe the filtering process
It allows us to develop selective attention by learning to focus on important information, making stimulus more intense, training with distraction, mental practice.
What are the benefits of selective attention
Improve reaction time
Improves chances of correct decisions
Able to concentrate on more detailed aspects of task
Helps decision making process
Describe the perceptual mechanism stage
DCR process:
DETECTION- performer has picked up relevant information and identified it as important
COMPARISON- Trying to match identified information to information already in memory
RECOGNITION- Performer has used information in memory to identify an appropriate response
Define perception
The process of coding and interpreting information
Describe the Translatory mechanism
Adapting and comparing coded information to memory so that decisions can be hard
Information from senses, once filtered, is then adapted to an image that can be sent to memory for comparison
Describe the effector mechanisms
The network of nerves that sends coded impulses to the muscles so muscles can perform the action
Muscles will receive information in coded impulses and once impulse is received, muscles will contract
Describe the feedback stage
Is information used during or after the response to aid movement correction
E.G. What went wrong?
