Theology - Vocab 8 Flashcards
creatio ex nihilo
a Latin phrase that literally means “creation out of nothing”
creation
christian theology views creation (entailing everything that exists other than God) as a result of God’s spoken word
creationism
in christian anthropology, creationism refers to the theory that God creates a person’s soul directly, creationism (or creation science) can also refer to a theory of the creation of the universe as having been accomplished in a literal seven-day week as recorded in the first chapters of Genesis
creed
derived from the Latin credo (I believe), a creed is a summary statement of christian faith and belief
criticism
biblical criticism is the attempt to interpret the Scriptures by uncovering the original meaning of the text, looking to the original historical setting in which it was written without reference to late theological traditions
Day of the Lord
a biblical phrase prevalent among OT prophets who pointed to a future event or era (not necessarily a single twenty-four-hour day) during which God would visit judgement on Israel or the world. The NT authors interpreted the phrase in futuristic sense but saw in Jesus Christ the beginning of the fulfillment of the Day of the Lord
deacon
derived from the Greek diakoneō (to serve), their original purpose, as seen in Acts 6, seems to have been to care for those Christians who were in physical need, thus freeing the apostles to minister the Word and to devote themselves to prayer
deconstruction
a term used in primarily in hermeneutics (the art and science of interpreting written tests or spoken language) to describe the process of analyzing a particular representation of reality so as to offer a critique of how a text “constructs” a picture of reality
decree
when a leader tells you to do something. theologically, it is when God says something will be done
deism
the belief that understands God as distant, in that God created the universe but then left it to run its course on its own
