The working memory model Flashcards
what is the working memory model?
An explanation of the memory used when working on a task each store is qualitatively different.
what did Baddeley and hitch say?
-felt that STM was not just one store but a number of different stores
-if you perform dual task performance where they are both visual tasks, you will perform less than if you do them separately.
HOWEVER If you do two things where one is visual and the other is sound = no interference
What is central executive?
monitors and coordinates all other mental functions in working memory
What other info on central executive?
-directs attention to particular tasks determining at any time how the brains resources are allocated to tasks
-has very limited capacity
cant attend to many things at once
what is phonological loop
codes speech sounds in working memory typically involving maintenance rehearsal
what is the phonological store
Holds the word you hear like an inner ear
What is the articulatory process
used for words that are heard or seen
these words are silently repeated like an inner voice
what is the visuo spatial sketchpad?
codes visual information in terms of separate objects as well as the arrangements of these in ones visual field
what did logue suggest?
suggested that the visuo-spatial sketchpad is divided into the visual cache and inner scribe
VC=Stores info about visual items
IS=Stores the arrangement of objects in the visual field
what is the episodic buffer?
receives input from many stores, temporarily storing this info and then integrates it in order to construct a mental episode of what is being experienced
