Q

Evaluation

Interference only explains some situations of forgetting

A
  • while interference effects do occur in everyday life they do not occur that often
  • special conditions are required for interference to lead to forgetting
  • the two memories need to be similar
  • Anderson = concluded that how much interference that can be contributed to forgetting remains unclear

evidence form lab studies

A
  • interference in memory is one of the most consistently demonstrated findings in the whole of psychology
  • thousands of lab studies=have been carried out into this explanation for forgetting
  • lab studies = showed that both types of interference are very likely to be common ways we forget info from LTM
  • STRENGTH = lab experiments = control the effects of irrelevant influences and thus give us confidence that interference is a valid explanation for at least some forgetting

Q

Evaluation

artificial materials

A
  • greater chance that interference will be demonstrated in the lab than in real life situations
  • tasks of pps = to learn lists of words
  • there is some distance from he things we learn and try to remember in everyday life
  • LIMITATION=use of artificial tasks makes interference much more likely in the lab
  • interference may not be as likely as an explanation of forgetting in everyday life as it is in the lab

Q

Evaluation

Accessibility vs availability

A

-researchers= often questioned whether interference effects = actually cause a memory to disappear or whether interference effects are just temporary
E.G Ceraso = found that if memory - was teste3d again after 24hrs = recognition (Accessibility) showed considerable spontaneous recovery whereas recall (availability) remained the same

  • suggest that interference occurs because memories are temporarily not accessible rather than having been lost
