Evaluation for cognitive interview Flashcards
Evaluation
support for the effectiveness of enhanced cognitive Interview
-research= suggests that the enhanced cognitive interview may offer special benefits
E.G meta-analysis by kohnken et al=combined data from 50 studies found= that the enhanced CI is consistently provided more correct info than the standard interview
-STRENGTH= studies = show that the enhanced CI there are recall practical benefits
Evaluation
some elements are more valuable than other?
-Milne and Bull = found that each individual element = equally valuable HE = Milne and bull found that using a combination of report everything and context reinstatement=produced better recall than any of the others.
- this confirmed police officers suspicions that some aspects of CI are more useful than others
- STRENGTH= because it suggests that at least two elements should be used to improve police interviewing of eyewitnesses» even if t he full CI is no used
*also = increases the credibility of CI
Evaluation
Quantity vs Quality
-procedure=designed to enhance the quantity of correct recall without compromising the quality of that info
E.G Kanken et al = found 61% increase of incorrect information when the enhanced CI was compared to a standard interview.
This means that police = need to treat all info collected from CI’s with caution.
*they do not guarantee accuracy
Evaluation
Variations of the CI are used
studies of effectiveness= use slightly different techniques
E.G Thames valley police = use a version that does not include the ‘changing perspectives’ components
others= only use some such as ‘reinstate context’ or ‘report everything’
