THE VERTEBRAL COLUMN Flashcards

1
Q

describe 4 functions of the vertebral column

A
  1. protects the spinal cord
  2. supports the weight of the body above the pelvis
  3. provides an axis for the body and a support for the head
  4. involved in posture and locomotion

Q

when does the cervical curvature develop?

A

the cervical curvature develops as the baby lifts and holds up its head during sitting

16
Q

what is the vertebral canal?

A

the tube formed by successive vertebral foramina

17
Q

what are intervertebral discs?

A

they are fibrocartilage pads that are sandwiched between adjacent vertebral bodies — they are responsible for 25% of the length of the vertebral column

18
Q

what is the inner intervertebral disc?

A

NUCLEUS PULPOSIS = forms a gelatinous mass that is compromised of water, a few collagen fibres and some cartilage cells

19
Q

what is the other intervertebral disc?

A

ANULUS FIBROSIS = made of many sheets of fibrous connective tissues that are layered in rings around the nucleus pulposis

20
Q

what are the 3 functions of intervertebral discs?

A
  1. increase size of vertebral column
  2. act as shock absorbers
  3. permit movement
21
Q

where does the spinal cord lie?

A

lies in the vertebral canal

22
Q

where do the spinal nerves exit the vertebral canal?

A

exit through intervertebral foramina
