The urinary system Flashcards
creatine
A waste product that breaks down with the normal breakdown of muscle
Urochrome
a pigmented blood product that gives urine its yellow colour
renal capsule
tough fibrous capsule that has a transparent sheet of connective tissue which gives the kidney its distinctive shape.
Adipose capsule
Perirenal fat, forms a protective layer
Renal fascia
Encloses the kidneys. It is a thin layer of dense connective tissue which anchors the kidney in its surroundings.
Pararenal fat
Mainly located on the posterior aspect of the kidney
Nephron
Cleanses the blood and balances the constituents of the circulation
glomerulus
A tuft of high-pressure capillaries formed from the afferent arterioles.
bowmans capsule
A continuous sophisticated tubule whose proximal end surrounds the glomerulus
efferent arteriole
The capillaries form a second arteriole after passing through the renal corpuscle called the efferent arteriole.
renal corpusle
The glomerulus and bowman’s capsule together form the renal corpuscle.
ureters
Muscular tubes that convey urine from the renal pelvis to the bladder
Bladder
A pear shaped highly distensible sac-like reservoir within the pelvis that temporarily stores urine.
urethra
a narrow tube from the bladder to the exterior that allows urination
hypertrophy
the increase in the volume of an organ or tissue due to the enlargement of its component cells.
