The lymphatic system Flashcards
interstitial fluid
The excess tissue fluid between the capillary spaces which results from the exchange of gases, nutrients, and wastes from body cells.
lymphatic capillaries
Tiny closed-ended tubular vessels that extend into interstitial spaces and parallel the blood capillaries.
lymphatic trunks
Vessels which drain the lymph back to the blood. They are named by the area of the body in which they drain.
right lymphatic duct
takes lymph from the right upper body and empties it into the right subclavian vein
thoracic duct
drains the body (minus right upper body) and empties it into the left subclavian vein
Lymph
interstitial fluid that has entered a lymphatic capillary.
Oedema
A build up of lymph in the interstitial spaces
lymphocyte
attack viruses, bacteria and parasitic cells that enter a lymph node.
Macrophage
Engulf and destroy foreign particles, debris and damaged cells.
lymph node
Bean shaped structure that filters lymph, carries out immune surveillance, and produces lymphocytes.
