The hepatic system Flashcards
Hepatic artery
Provides oxygenated blood to the liver
Hepatic portal vein
Provides nutrient rich blood to the liver
Lobule
A subdivision of the four main liver lobes and is the basic functional unit of the liver
Hepatic portal system
Connects the capillaries of the gastrointestinal tract with the capillaries in the liver.
Portal system
A portal system is a venous structure that enables blood from one set of capillary beds to drain into another set of capillary beds, without first returning this blood to the heart.
Hepatic artery
A blood vessel that supplies oxygenated blood to the liver
Hepatic portal vein
A vessel located in the abdominal cavity that is formed by the union of the superior mesenteric and splenic veins that channel blood from the gastrointestinal tract and spleen to the capillary beds in the liver.
Common hepatic duct
Transports the bile made by liver cells to the gallbladder and duodenum via the common bile duct
Kupffer cells
Phagocytic macrophages that are fixed to the inner lining of the hepatic sinusoids. They remove bacteria and other foreign particles that enter the blood via the intestinal wall which are brought to the liver via the hepatic portal vein.
Bile canaliculi
Carry secretions from the hepatic cells to the bile ductules. The ductules of neighbouring lobules conjoin to form bile ducts. These ducts converge in turn to form the common bile duct.
Portal triad
The group of vessels that serve lobules that are distributed at equidistant points around the rim of the cells which are organised like a bicycle wheel.

cholecystokinin
the hormone released when protein is detected in the duodenum.
Sphincter of oddi
Where the bile duct meets the pancreatic duct to form the common bile duct at the duodenum.
