The structure of DNA Flashcards
What is DNA
a long complex molecule which carries genetic information for making proteins
Where is DNA
DNA is coiled into thread like structures called chromosomes
These structure are found in the nucleus of cells
Describe the structure of dna
Double stranded helix held together by complementary base pairs
Name the 4 different bases
Guanine
Cytosine
Adenine
Thymine
name the complementary base pair for Adenine
Thymine
name the complementary base pair for guanine
Cytosine
If there are 600 adenine how many thymine will there be
600 as there is always the same amounts
What are genes
a gene is a smal section of dna which carries code to produce one single protein
what are proteins
complex molecules made up of amino acids
where does protein synthesis take place
ribosome
what is a messenger RNA ( mRNA)
a molecule which carries a complimentary copy of genetic code from dna in the nucleus to a ribsome where the protein is assembled from amino acids
Describe the stages of mRNA
Dna uncoils and the two strands separate
a complimentary copy of the gene is made this is called a mRNA
mRNA leaves the nucleus through a pore and travels to a ribosome
The ribosome reads three bases at a time
the ribosome continues to read the mRNS until a polypeptide chain is formed
how many bases code for one amino acid
3 a triplet
