Cell Structure Flashcards
What is a cell
cells are the basic unit of life
every living organism is made up of one or more cell
what are the four types of cells
- animal
- plant
- bacterial
- fungal
What is the cell membrane
surrounds the cell and holds the cell together
controls entry and exit of substances into and out of cell
what types of cell have a cell membrane
all the cells
what is the cell wall
made out of cellulose
maintains cell structure and supports the cell
What type of cell has a cell wall
- plant cell
- Bacterial cell
- fungal cell
what is a cytolplasm
it is the site of chemical reactions within a cell
what types of cells have cytoplasm
all cell types
what is the nucleus
contains genetic information and controls cell activities
what cells have a nucleus
animal cell
plant cell
fungal cell
what is the chloroplast
a green pigment called chlorophyll they are the site of photosynthesis
i hat kind of cells have a chloroplast
plant cell
what is the vacuole
a fluid filled sac containing cell sap
what kind of cells have a vacuole
- plant cell
- fungal cell
what is the mitochondria
site of aerobic stages of respiration
what kind of cells have a mitochondria
animal cell
plant cell
fungal cell
What is a ribosome
They are the site of protein synthesis
what kind of cells have a ribsome
all cell types
what are plasmids
plasmids are circular rings of dna
What kind of cell has a plasmid
Bacterial cell
what is the difference between a plant cell wall and a bacterial cell wall
plant cell wall is made of cellulose
bacterial cell wall is made of a diff material
what are the three magnifications levels on a microscope
x4
x10
x40
what is the sun to find out total magnification
total magnification = eyepiece x objective
how to prepare a cheek slide
- swab inside of your cheek and smear onto the centre of the slide
- put one drop of methyl blue on the slide
- gentle put a clover lip over the cells
- view the slide under the microscope and draw what you can see
what are the two types of microscopes
light microscopes
electron microscope
Why do you add stains when viewing certain cells
Stains must be added to view the structures of a cell more clearly
What is micrometers in millimetres
1mm = 1000um
how to calculate cell size
convert diameter to micrometers
count the number of cells you can see going from one side to another
- length is across the field of view
- breadth is down the feild of view
divide the diameter of the field of view by the number of cells
