Control and Communication Flashcards
What does the nervous system consist of
the central nervous system and other nerves ( peripheral nervous system )
what does the central nervous system consist of
the brain and the spinal cord
how does the CNS control the body
by receiving information from sense organs and then responding to that information
how is information from the CNS carrier
by nerve cells called neurons
what is the function of the cerebrum
controls memory, reasoning, imagination, conscious thought and intelligence
function of the cerebellum
controls balance and muscular coordination
function for the medulla
controls breathing and heart rate
what is a response to stimuli
can be a rapid action from a muscle or a slower response from a gland
what are the three types of neurons
sensory neurons
inter neurons
motor neurons
what is the function of sensory neurons
to pass the information to the cns
what is the inter neurons function
to operate within the CNS which processes information from the senses that require a response
what is the function of motor neurons
enables a response to occur at an effector
what ways is information carried in the CNS
electrical impulses
chemical messengers
what do electrical impulses do
carries messages along the neurons
what does chemical messengers do
transfer the messages between neurons at synapses
what do reflex’s do
protect the body from harm
how does the sensory neuron work in the reflex arc
carries electrical impulses from sense organs (receptors ) to the CNS
how does the inter neuron function in the reflex arc
carries electrical impulses from sensory neurons to the motor neurons within the CNS
how does the motor neuron function in the reflex arc
carries electrical impulses from CNS to muscle or gland ( effector )
what are hormones made of
proteins
what do hormones do
they act as chemical messengers within the body
where are hormones released from
they are released from endocrine glands into the bloodstream where they can travel around the body
what hormone does the pancreas produce and what affect does it have
Insulin and Glucagon which controls blood sugar levels
what hormones are released from the ovaries and what effect is had
oestrogen which stimulates female sexual development
what hormones is released from the testes and what effect does this have
testosterone which stimulates male sexual development
what are target tissues
cells with complementary receptor proteins for specific hormones, so only that tissue will be affect by these hormones
how are blood sugar levels controlled
by the hormones insulin and glucagon which are secreted by the pancreas
what role does the liver play
a store for glycogen
