The Structure And Function Of Membranes Flashcards
What does compartmentalisation mean
The formation of separate membrane-bound areas in a cell
What is the fluid mosaic model
The model built upon the early lipid-Bilayer model in which proteins occupy various positions in the membrane
What Instrinsic proteins
They are embedded through both layers of the membrane with amino acids that have hydrophobic r groups on the outside that interact with the hydrophobic code of the membrane
Channel and carrier proteins
What are glycoproteins
They have attached carbohydrate chains on them where they are embedded in the cell surface meme brane
What are roles of glycoproteins
in cell adhesion
Receptors for chemical signals and cause cell communication
What are glycolipids
Lipids with attached carbohydrates chains
They are cell markers or antigens
Where are extrinsic proteins
Ok one side the the bilayer
They have hydrophilic r groups on their outer surface
What is cholesterol
Regulates fluidity of the membrane
In between the phospholipids and give stability
What do organic molecules do to membranes
They dissolve membranes because they are less polar than water
What is diffusion across a channel protein called
Facilitated diffusion
For polar molecules or ions
What are selectively permeable membranes
Membranes that contain carrier proteins as the proteins are usually specific to a molecule or ion
What are the two types of bulk transport
Endocytosis - material goes in to cell
Cell surface membrane invaginates and forms a vesicles
Exocytosis - material goes out of cell
Vesicles usually formed from the Golgi apparatus fuse our of cell
