3.7Types Of Protein Flashcards
What are the main characteristics globular proteins
Compact
Water soluble as hydrophilic groups are ok the outside
Spherical
What is insulin
What are some of its characteristic to help carry out its function
A globular protein that’s a hormone involved in the regulation of blood glucose concentration
It’s soluble to travel in the bloodstream
What are conjugated proteins
Globular protein that contain a non-protein component called a prosthetic group
What proteins are globular proteins
Insulin
Conjugated proteins
What proteins are conjugated proteins and what prosthetic group do they contain
Haemoglobin snd catalase
Contain a haem group which contains iron II
What is haemoglobin
Red oxygen carrying pigment found in the red blood cells
It has 4 subunits which each contain a haem group and the iron in the haem group combines to the oxygen molecule
What is catalase
It’s an enzyme that has 4 protein subunits which each contain a haem group
The haem groups allows the catalase to interact with hydrogen peroxide and speed up breakdowns
What are fibrous proteins characteristics
They are formed from long insoluble molecules and have a high % of hydrophobic groups
They have a limited and repetitive amino acid sequence giving them organised structures
They are long and strong and don’t fold
What are types of fibrous proteins
Collagen
Keratin
Elastin
What is keratin
It’s present in hair nails and skin
Contains cysteine giving the protein strong disulfide bonds makingbit insoluble
What is elastin
It’s in elastic fibres in walls of blood vessels and alveoli of lungs and give structures the flexibility to expand when needed
What is elastin makes from
Tropoelastin which are stretchy molecules
What is collagen
A connective tissue found in the skin tendons ligaments and nervous system
It’s made of 3 polypeptides that are wound in a rope like structure giving it flexibility
