The Skeletal System Flashcards
What are the functions of the skeleton?
- Shape
- Support
- Protection
- Movement
- Blood cell production
What is a joint?
Where two or more bones meet and is made up of a number of different parts that all work together to produce movement
What is a fixed joint? And example?
Allow no movement
Cranium
What is a slightly moveable joint? And example?
Allow small amounts of movement
Joints between the vertebrae
What is a synovial joint? And example?
Allow lots of movement
Hip, shoulder, knee joints
What are the 6 types of synovial joint?
- Ball and socket - shoulder
- Hinge - elbow/knee
- Gliding - tarsals
- Condyloid - wrist
- Saddle
- Pivot - neck
What is cartilage?
A shock absorber acts as a cushion and reduces friction between bones. Lubricates joint.
What is a ligament?
Links bone to bone
What is a tendon?
Likes muscle to bone
What is extension?
Increasing the angle at a joint
What is flexion?
Decreasing the angle at a joint
What is abduction?
Where a limb is moved away from
the centre line of the body
What is adduction?
When a limb is moved towards the centre line of the body
What is rotation?
When a limb moved in a circular motion around a joint
