What is obesity?
Someone who is abnormally fat with a BMI of 30 or over
Effects of obesity?
- Poor cardiovascular endurance - heart problems
- Joint problems
- Immobile - decrease speed and agility
- Embarrassed about appearance
What is anorexia?
An eating disorder where someone is underweight with a BMI of 18.50 or less
What is bulimia?
An emotional disorder where you are average weight but make yourself vomit - purging
What problems may a sportsperson have if they diet to excess?
- Low energy
- Low muscle mass from lack of protein
- Weak bones from lack of vits/mins
What is carbohydrate loading?
The building up of carbs 1 week prior to and endurance event to boost energy stores. Starchy foods/complex carbs stored as glycogen in muscles and liver for slow release.
Why do athletes carbohydrate load?
To reduce the effects of fatigue in the later stages of a competition
Effects of dehydration?
- Fatigue
- Temperature increases
- Dizzy
- High blood pressure
