The Skeletal System Flashcards
What is a facet joint and its location?
A joint located in the spine that restricts excessive movement.
What is flexation?
Bending forward.
What is extension?
Bending backward.
Describe short bones.
Shaped roughly like a cube, located in the hands, kneecaps, and feet.
Describe flat bones.
Provide broad spaces for attachment, primary function is to provide protection.
What is smooth muscle?
Muscle that forms on the walls of blood vessels and hollow organs.
Is smooth muscle voluntary or involuntary?
Involuntary.
Where is cardiac muscle located?
Found in the walls of the heart.
Is cardiac muscle voluntary or involuntary?
Involuntary.
What is skeletal muscle?
Muscle that supports skeletal movement, maintains posture and generates heat.
Is skeletal muscle voluntary or involuntary?
Voluntary.
What is involuntary muscle?
Not under conscious control.
What is striated muscle?
Long elongated fibres for movement.
What are the three types of joint?
- Fibrous
- Cartilaginous
- Synovial
What is the function of fibrous joints?
Do not allow movement, connect bone.
What is the function of cartilaginous joints?
Allow some movement.
What is the function of synovial joints?
Allow the most movement with minimal friction.
What is the musculoskeletal systems function?
Provides form, support, stability, and movement.
What are the components of the musculoskeletal system?
Bones, cartilage, and ligaments.
What are the functions of the skeleton?
(5 functions)
- Act as a framework for organs/organ systems.
- Protect body systems.
- Support movement.
- Provide storage for minerals.
- Cell production in the bone marrow.
What is a sesamoid bone?
Bone embedded in tendon.
E.g., patella.
How do osteoporosis and osteoarthritis begin developing?
A reduction in osteocytes.
When do osteoporosis and osteoarthritis occur?
When bone is not regenerated and loses density.
What is an irregular bone?
A bone with a complex shape.
E.g., spine.
