The Nervous System Flashcards
What is the nervous system?
A collection of nerves and specialised cells that transmit signals.
What is the PNS?
Peripheral nervous system.
What is the CNS?
Central nervous system.
Describe the physiology of the CNS system.
(1 phase)
- CNS transmits and receives signals from the brain and spinal cord.
What is the brains role in the CNS?
To receive information, respond to it, and store information.
What is the spines role in the CNS?
Conducts signals and controls reflexes.
Describe the physiology of the PNS system.
(3 phases)
- PNS communicates to motor neurons and sensory neurons.
- Motor neurons communicate with somatic NS (nervous system) and autonomic NS.
- Somatic NS communicates to sympathetic division and parasympathetic division.
What are the motor neurons’ role in the PNS?
Communicates with muscles and glands.
What are the sensory neurons role in the PNS?
Communicates with sensory organs and relays that to the CNS.
What is the role of the somatic NS in the PNS?
Controls voluntary movement.
What is the role of the autonomic NS in the PNS?
Controls involuntary movement.
What is the role of sympathetic division in the PNS?
Controls “fight or flight” response.
What is the role of parasympathetic division in the PNS?
Controls “rest or digest” response.
What are the functions of the frontal lobe?
(4 functions)
- Emotion
- Expression
- Problem solving
- Judgment
What are the functions of the parietal lobe?
(4 functions)
- Spatial awareness
- Touch
- Navigation
- Language processing
